What Makes a Website Ready for Google and AI Search in 2026

The rules for ranking changed in 2025. Core Web Vitals, structured data, and content depth now affect your visibility in both traditional search results and AI-generated answers. Here's what your site needs.

Why 2026 is a different game

Google's Search Generative Experience and AI Overviews have changed the first page of results for millions of queries. For informational queries — 'how to connect my CRM to my website,' 'what does a marketing analytics dashboard cost,' 'best CRM for construction companies' — an AI summary often appears above the organic results.

To appear in those AI summaries, your content needs to be accurate, specific, and structured so the AI can extract a clear answer. Thin content that would have ranked in 2022 on domain authority and keyword density alone now performs poorly in both traditional results and AI summaries.

Core Web Vitals: the floor you must reach

Google's Core Web Vitals — Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, and Cumulative Layout Shift — are now ranking signals. A site that scores poorly on these metrics will not rank competitively for commercial queries, regardless of content quality.

The practical targets: LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds, CLS under 0.1. These are achievable for any well-built site, but they require deliberate engineering. Common issues that fail these targets: large unoptimized hero images, third-party scripts loaded synchronously, and layout shifts caused by late-loading fonts or ads.

The fastest path to passing Core Web Vitals is a modern React or Next.js stack with server-side rendering or static generation, images served via a CDN with proper sizing and lazy loading, and no blocking third-party scripts in the critical path.

Structured data: the markup AI and Google read

JSON-LD structured data tells search engines and AI systems exactly what your content is — an article, a service, a local business, a FAQ, a product. Pages with proper structured data are significantly more likely to appear in rich results and AI summaries.

The essential structured data for a consulting or service business: Organization schema on the homepage, LocalBusiness schema if you serve a geographic area, Service schema on each service page, FAQPage schema on any FAQ section, Article schema on every blog or article page, and BreadcrumbList schema on deep pages.

Getting structured data right is mostly about having the right content in the right places (a real business address, real phone number, real service descriptions) and only partly about the markup itself. The markup is straightforward; the content substance is harder.

Content depth: what AI search rewards

AI search systems are trained to identify the most authoritative, specific answer to a question. Generic content that covers a topic at the surface level, such as short posts that tell you 'why CRM is important' without telling you how to choose one, performs poorly.

Content that performs well in AI results has these properties: it answers a specific question with a specific answer, it uses precise language rather than hedged generalities, it includes examples that are concrete rather than hypothetical, and it demonstrates genuine expertise through technical detail that a non-expert couldn't fake.

The volume of content matters less than it did in 2022. A single long article that genuinely answers a question at depth outperforms a stack of short surface-level posts. The days of publishing thin content at scale are over for businesses that want AI visibility.

Internal linking: the structural signal

Internal linking tells both Google and AI systems which pages are most important, what topics they relate to, and how your site is organized. A well-linked site surfaces its most valuable content naturally; a poorly linked site buries it.

The practical rule: every article should link to at least two relevant service pages. Every service page should link to at least two relevant articles. Hub pages (a topic index page) should link to every article in that topic cluster. This creates the topical authority structure that both search engines and AI systems recognize.

Anchor text matters: link to '/services/crm-integration' with text like 'CRM integration for service businesses,' not 'click here.' Descriptive anchor text is a signal about what the linked page covers.
